A buyer may receive three documents for the same line item: a piping material specification that names ASTM A106 or ASTM A312, a line list that gives NPS and Schedule, and a drawing that shows an outside diameter or bore requirement. Problems begin when the dimensional standard is assumed instead of stated.
For carbon and alloy pipe, the dimensional basis is commonly ASME B36.10. For stainless pipe, B36.19M is the dedicated dimensional standard, but the official ASME description also notes that B36.10 includes other thicknesses commercially available in stainless material. That is why material name alone does not always identify the intended wall series.

Nominal Pipe Size is a designation, not a direct measurement for most pipe sizes. When the same NPS is used, the outside diameter is the common geometric anchor. The inside diameter changes with wall thickness because ID is derived from OD minus twice the actual wall.
The word Schedule is also a designation. It points to a nominal wall thickness in the selected dimensional standard; it is not a universal pressure class and it is not a tolerance. Two purchase descriptions can therefore use the same NPS and still produce a technical conflict if one intends B36.10 Schedule 40 and the other intends B36.19M Schedule 40S.

Many familiar stainless Schedule S values align with B36.10 wall values, which creates a dangerous habit: buyers assume the match is universal. ASME's official B36.19M description identifies exceptions, including portions of Schedule 10S at larger NPS and selected Schedule 40S and 80S sizes. These exceptions are enough to make direct substitution by label unsafe.

1. Leaving off the S suffix on stainless pipe and assuming the supplier will infer B36.19M.
2. Writing NPS, DN and OD values that do not correspond to one another in the same requisition.
3. Using Schedule as if it were a pressure rating, without a design-code wall calculation.
4. Calculating ID or flow area from nominal wall and then treating the result as a guaranteed minimum bore.
5. Changing carbon steel to stainless steel while retaining wall, fittings, weight and support assumptions without rechecking the line class.

The safest purchase description does not ask the supplier to infer a dimensional standard from the material name. It states the product standard and grade, the B36 dimensional basis, NPS/DN/OD, Schedule with the correct suffix, nominal wall, length, ends, quantity and inspection documents.
