API 5CT Casing Dimensions Database

Date: 2026-09-03

API 5CT casing dimensions are identified by casing outside diameter and nominal weight, but procurement decisions normally require additional fields: wall thickness, nominal inside diameter, drift diameter, end finish and connection. Nominal ID describes pipe-body geometry; drift diameter defines the minimum verified passage for the applicable drift mandrel.

Buyers preparing a casing inquiry can also review Forever Steel's API 5CT casing pipe supply page for available grades, connection options, inspection requirements and quotation support.

Database overview: dimensional and grade fields should support search, comparison and RFQ preparation.

Full API 5CT Casing Dimension Dataset

The working dataset below covers 13 table sections and 14 visible OD families from 4 1/2 in through 20 in, with multiple nominal-weight lines where shown in the supplied benchmark. Values are displayed as USC / metric. The final column adds the benchmark's row-level common-grade labels so the web prototype can support grade filtering; these labels are not a governing API applicability table or a Forever Steel stock commitment.

VISIBLE DATABASE NOTICE

A grade shown beside a size/weight row is a reference label, not proof that the combination is permitted, project-qualified or currently available. Confirm the governing standard edition, exact grade/type, connection, service requirements, inspection and special drift before ordering.

How to Read an API 5CT Casing Size Line

A casing description such as 5 1/2 in x 17.0 lb/ft does not provide two alternative measurements of the same property. The first value identifies the casing size and outside-diameter family; the second identifies the nominal weight line. Together, they lead to the applicable wall thickness, nominal ID and drift values.

The purchase order should therefore identify more than '5 1/2-inch casing.' At minimum, state size, nominal weight, grade, end finish or connection, length range, quantity and governing API 5CT edition.

Nominal ID Is Not the Same as Drift Diameter

Nominal inside diameter is a geometric value based on nominal dimensions:

NOMINAL GEOMETRY

Nominal ID = Nominal OD - 2 x nominal wall thickness

That calculation does not represent the smallest measured bore at every point along a manufactured joint. Real pipe is subject to permitted dimensional variation, straightness conditions and local geometry within the governing acceptance requirements.

Drift testing answers a different question: can the specified mandrel pass through the casing bore over the required test path without obstruction?

For completion-tool clearance, plug placement or other passage-sensitive work, nominal ID alone is not an adequate acceptance criterion.

The same casing OD can have different wall thickness, nominal ID and drift clearance.

Changing nominal weight can therefore affect more than freight or pipe-body strength. A heavier casing line within the same OD family generally reduces the available bore and drift clearance.

Worked Example: Will a 4.70-Inch Tool Pass?

Assume the preliminary program lists a tool with a maximum outside diameter of 4.70 in.

Option A: 5 1/2 in x 17.0 lb/ft

• Nominal ID: 4.892 in

• Referenced standard drift: 4.767 in

• Tool OD: 4.700 in

• Difference between drift and tool OD: 0.067 in

On dimensions alone, the tool is smaller than the referenced drift diameter.

Option B: 5 1/2 in x 20.0 lb/ft

• Nominal ID: 4.778 in

• Referenced standard drift: 4.653 in

• Tool OD: 4.700 in

• Tool OD exceeds the referenced drift diameter

The second option should not be accepted merely because the tool is smaller than the nominal ID. Its tool OD exceeds the referenced drift value.

This example is only a screening check. Final clearance review must also consider:

• Actual maximum tool OD, including protectors and accessories

• Connection or accessory restrictions

• Centralizers, packers, plugs and other running equipment

• Dogleg severity and well trajectory

• Scale, debris, deformation or post-installation restrictions

• Special-drift requirements and project operating clearance

• Engineer and tool-provider approval

DECISION RULE

Use nominal ID for preliminary geometry review, but use the specified and verified drift requirement as the procurement acceptance basis for passage-sensitive equipment.

Standard Drift, Special Drift and Actual Measured Bore

These three terms should remain separate in the RFQ and inspection record.

Term

What it represents

Appropriate use

Standard drift

Standardized acceptance for the applicable product

Normal API purchase when no different requirement applies

Special drift

A project-defined requirement agreed in the order

Projects needing additional passage clearance

Actual measured bore

Measurements for a particular joint or mapped string

Detailed operational planning and traceability

Passing a standard drift test does not mean the entire bore equals the drift diameter. It means the pipe passed the specified drift acceptance procedure.

A special-drift request can affect manufacturing route, yield, inspection, price and delivery time. The buyer should state the required mandrel diameter, length, edge condition, test procedure and recording requirement.

Nominal Weight, Plain-End Mass and Shipment Weight

'Casing weight' can refer to different values. This is a frequent source of quotation and logistics discrepancies.

Nominal weight designation

The nominal weight is part of the standard casing item description. It helps identify the corresponding wall thickness and dimensional line.

Calculated plain-end mass

Plain-end mass represents the calculated pipe-body mass before the effect of couplings and some end processing. It supports theoretical material and lifting calculations but should not automatically be treated as invoice weight.

Threaded-and-coupled mass

A threaded-and-coupled joint includes connection-related mass and may be represented differently in standard tables, mill documentation or commercial schedules.

Actual shipment weight

Actual bundle or shipment weight depends on joint lengths, quantity, couplings, protectors, packaging and the agreed weighing method.

QUOTATION CONTROL

Ask suppliers to identify whether a stated kg/m or lb/ft value is the nominal weight designation, calculated plain-end mass, threaded-and-coupled nominal mass or actual scale weight.

What the Dimensions Database Can and Cannot Decide

The database can help

The database cannot

Find wall thickness for a size and nominal weight

Perform burst, collapse or tension design

Compare nominal ID and drift

Confirm combined-load capacity

Screen preliminary tool clearance

Establish sour-service suitability

Convert USC and metric fields

Select a grade from depth alone

Prepare a clearer casing RFQ

Confirm connection sealability

Estimate theoretical pipe-body mass

Confirm current mill stock

Flag supplier-confirmation items

Guarantee passage after installation

Grade selection and well design must account for the complete load and service envelope. A higher nominal weight or higher-strength grade is not automatically the safer purchasing choice if bore, connection, corrosion or completion requirements are not satisfied.

From Database Selection to an RFQ Line

After selecting a database row, the page should generate an editable RFQ line rather than sending only the dimensions.

EXAMPLE RFQ OUTPUT

API's current update register lists Errata 3 for the 11th edition in June 2026. The page owner should review the API update register before every database revision.

The 11th edition removed the former Product Specification Level terminology used in the 10th edition. New RFQs should not continue using 'API 5CT PSL1' or 'API 5CT PSL2' as if those were current 11th-edition product designations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q01 What is the difference between casing size and casing ID?

Casing size normally refers to the outside-diameter family. The inside diameter changes with wall thickness and nominal weight, so two casing items with the same size designation can have different IDs and drift diameters.

Q02 Is API 5CT casing nominal weight the actual pipe weight?

Not necessarily. Nominal weight identifies a standard casing line. Plain-end calculated mass, threaded-and-coupled mass and actual shipment weight may differ. The quotation should state which value is being used.

Q03 Can nominal ID be used to select a downhole tool?

Nominal ID can support preliminary screening, but it should not be the only passage criterion. Review drift, the tool envelope, connections, accessories, well geometry and required operating clearance.

Q04 What is a special-drift casing requirement?

Special drift is a project-specific passage requirement different from the normal standard-drift route. It should define the mandrel diameter, length, test method and reporting requirement.

Q05 Does a database row confirm that the casing is available?

No. A standard dimensional combination is not proof of stock or current production availability. The supplier must confirm size, weight, grade, manufacturing route, connection, quantity and delivery schedule.

Q06 Which steel grades are within the API 5CT 11th Edition scope?

API 5CT 11th Edition Addendum 1 lists H40, J55, K55, N80 (all types), L80 (all types), C90, R95, T95, P110, C110, C125 and Q125. The applicable grade and exact type still depend on the product, design, service environment, connection and purchaser requirements.

Q07 Should an API 5CT 11th Edition RFQ specify PSL1 or PSL2?

No. API has stated that the 11th edition no longer references the former PSL designations. Specify the required grade, type, supplementary requirements, connection, inspection and service conditions directly.
