How to Prevent Surface Damage to Coated Steel Pipes During Transportation

In international steel logistics, the integrity of the 3LPE, FBE, or 3LPP coating is as vital as the steel grade itself. For infrastructure projects in the Middle East (Oil & Gas)or South America (Mining), even minor surface gouges can lead to costly site rejections.

At Forever Steel, we implement a multi-layered protection strategy, combining international standards with specialized soft-material shielding to ensure zero-defect delivery.

I. The "Safe Distance" Principle: Soft Buffering Materials

The secret to protecting anti-corrosion layers lies in the details of the materials used to isolate the pipes. We go beyond basic timber by using:

  • Hemp Rope Spiraling: We wrap thickheavy-duty hemp ropesaround the pipe body at strategic intervals. This creates a "safe buffer zone" between the coatings of adjacent pipes, maintaining a physical gap that prevents abrasion during the constant vibration of sea transit
  • Straw Mats & Corrugated Cardboard: To prevent localized pressure marks, we placestraw matsormulti-layer cardboardbetween the pipe surface and the support cradles. These materials absorb shocks and distribute the weight load more evenly across the 3LPE surface.
  • Non-Woven Fabric Wrapping: For high-precision projects (especially FBE coatings), we offerfull-body non-woven fabric wrapping. This shields the entire coating from dust, moisture, and micro-scuffs during multiple transshipments.

II. Safe Lifting: Slings vs. Hooks

The transition from warehouse to vessel is the highest risk phase for mechanical damage.

Nylon Webbing Slings: We strictly prohibit the use of bare steel wire ropes. Only high-strengthNylon or Polyester slingsare used to distribute lifting pressure.

Padded Lifting Hooks: If hooks are required for large-diameter LSAW or SSAW pipes, they are lined with polyurethane or soft lead to protect the internal lining and the pipe mouth.

III. Securing for Long-Haul Logistics

Ocean freight involves constant movement. Stability is the key to preventing "holiday" (coating gap) formation.

Wooden Saddles & Chocks: The bottom layer rests on contoured V-shaped wooden cradles (Saddles) to prevent lateral rolling.

Non-Metallic Lashing: We use high-tensionpolyester ratchet strapsrather than steel chains. If chains are required for heavy-tonnage loads, rubber shielding is placed at all contact points.

Dunnage Quality: We utilize ISPM 15-compliant, heat-treated timber that provides a broad surface area to minimize point-pressure.

IV. Protection Standards by Coating Type

Coating Type

Vulnerability

Protective Requirement

3LPE / 3LPP

Indentation / Scratches

Use wide dunnage (>100mm) and hemp rope spacers.

FBE (Epoxy)

Brittleness / Chipping

Full non-woven fabric wrappingrecommended; zero-impact handling.

Internal Lining

Corrosion / Scuffing

Air-tight end caps and soft-padded hooks are essential.

V. Summary: The Forever Steel Advantage

While others only use basic timber dunnage,Forever Steelintegrates professional field experience with rigorous QA/QC. By combininghemp rope spiraling, straw mat interlining, andnon-woven fabric shields, we guarantee your coated pipes arrive in "Mill-Fresh" condition, ready for immediate installation.
